The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Disney California Adventure Park · Hollywood Land

Overview

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure dropped guests through a randomized sequence of elevator-shaft plunges inside a decaying 1930s Hollywood hotel, following the same Twilight Zone-themed storyline used at the Walt Disney World and (later) Walt Disney Studios Park versions. The queue built dread through a dusty hotel lobby and boiler-room sequence before guests boarded the service elevator for the ride's signature drops, which varied in number and pattern from ride to ride.

ParksLog Verdict

A genuinely well-loved thrill ride whose atmospheric queue was arguably as memorable as the drops themselves. The retheme into Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the more successful conversions in Disney's history — same bones, new story — but longtime fans of the Twilight Zone theming still consider the original hotel concept a high point of DCA's early thrill-ride lineup.

About this experience

Freefall drop ride set in a crumbling 1930s Hollywood hotel haunted by supernatural forces, sending guests through randomized elevator-shaft drop sequences after an atmospheric queue through the hotel's decaying lobby.

Best For

  • Guests who rode it and want to relive the memory
  • Disney park historians comparing DCA's Tower of Terror to its Guardians of the Galaxy successor
  • Fans of the Twilight Zone theming and its randomized drop format

Tips

  • The same building and drop-tower ride system now house Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! — the physical drop experience is a close relative of this ride's.
  • The atmospheric hotel-lobby queue was considered one of the most effective pieces of environmental storytelling at DCA in its day.
  • It was one of several Tower of Terror installations across Disney parks worldwide, most of which have since been retheme'd.

History

This version of Tower of Terror opened at Disney California Adventure in 2004. It closed permanently on January 2, 2017, and the same building and drop-tower mechanism were retheme'd into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, which opened later that year with an entirely new Marvel storyline layered over the same core ride system.

Fun Facts

  • DCA's Tower of Terror opened in 2004, well after the original Walt Disney World version that debuted in 1994.
  • The ride's drop sequences were randomized so no two rides felt exactly the same.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! reused the same core drop-tower mechanism and building footprint after the retheme.
  • This was one of several Twilight Zone Tower of Terror installations Disney built worldwide, most of which have since been converted to other IP.
