Na'vi River Journey

Disney's Animal Kingdom · Pandora – The World of Avatar

Overview

The Shaman of Songs at the end of Na'vi River Journey is widely considered one of the most technically sophisticated Audio-Animatronics Disney has built — fluid body movement and facial expression well beyond what the ride's slow, atmospheric pace would suggest it needs. It opened the same day as Avatar Flight of Passage in 2017 as that ride's quieter counterpart: a boat drifting through a glowing bioluminescent rainforest rather than a simulator, with no thrill element at all.

ParksLog Verdict

Don't skip it in the rush toward Flight of Passage's line — the queue here moves considerably faster, and the Shaman of Songs figure alone justifies the stop. It's more atmosphere than excitement, so guests expecting a thrill will be underwhelmed; guests expecting a mood piece will be won over.

About this experience

Slow boat ride through a glowing bioluminescent rainforest in Pandora.

Best For

  • All ages
  • Families with young children
  • Avatar fans
  • Guests seeking a calm atmospheric experience

Tips

  • Lightning Lane for this attraction is typically unnecessary — queues here move considerably faster than at Flight of Passage
  • The bioluminescent environment is most impactful in the darker indoor sections — let your eyes adjust after the outdoor queue
  • Pandora after dark is stunning even without riding — the entire land glows and is worth exploring in the evening

History

Na'vi River Journey opened in 2017 alongside Avatar Flight of Passage as the gentler, family-accessible counterpart attraction in Pandora – The World of Avatar. The Shaman of Songs animatronic was developed as the technical centerpiece of the ride and pushed the limits of Audio-Animatronic facial expression and fluid body movement at the time of opening.

Previous attractions

  • Camp Minnie-Mickey (1998–2014) — Area replaced by Pandora – The World of Avatar.
