Space Mountain's actual top speed, 28 mph, would be unremarkable on almost any other coaster in Florida — the entire ride is built around removing your ability to see the track, not around raw speed, and that absence of visual cues is what makes every turn feel sharper than it measurably is. It opened in 1975 as Magic Kingdom's first genuine thrill ride and got a full refurbishment in 2009 without touching the original cone-shaped building. Two separate tracks, Alpha and Omega, run simultaneously with slightly different layouts, and most riders never notice which one they got.
