The hidden cave playground most families walk right past at Islands of Adventure

At a park packed with roller coasters and big-name rides, most families move fast. Queue, ride, repeat. But tucked in the back of Camp Jurassic is a spot that doesn't have a queue, doesn't have a show time, and doesn't show up on most "what to do at Islands of Adventure" lists.

It's a hidden cave system — and kids almost always love it more than their parents expect.

What is it, exactly?

Camp Jurassic is the dinosaur-themed playground area inside the Jurassic Park section of Islands of Adventure. Most families see the main rope bridges and stop there. But if you walk all the way to the back-left corner, the playground opens into a multi-level cave system built into the rocks.

It feels less like a theme park attraction and more like a place you genuinely discovered.

Inside you'll find:

  • Winding cave tunnels to explore on your own
  • Rope bridges connecting different levels
  • Hidden waterfalls and dripping rock walls
  • Mist and water effects that keep things cool
  • Distant dinosaur sounds echoing through the dark

There are no signs pointing you here. No cast members directing traffic. You just walk in and explore.

How to find it

Getting to Camp Jurassic

Once you're inside Islands of Adventure:

  1. Head to the Jurassic Park area (follow the giant dinosaur gates)
  2. Find the Camp Jurassic playground
  3. Walk through the playground all the way to the back-left side
  4. Look for dark rock openings and shaded tunnel entrances — that's the cave entrance

If it starts to feel like a hidden expedition site, you're in the right spot.

Google Maps coordinates

If you want to pin it before your visit, the back section of Camp Jurassic is here:

Coordinates: 28.4712, -81.4716

These drop you close to the area — you'll still walk through the playground to reach the caves.

Why it's worth making time for

It's a natural energy break. After a few big rides, kids need room to move freely. The cave system lets them run, climb, and explore without any structure — which is often exactly what they want.

It's shaded and cool. Mid-day in Florida is hot. The caves are one of the best natural shade spots in the whole park, and the mist effects help a lot.

There are no lines. No waiting, no timer, no "next show at." You stay as long as you want.

The photos are unlike anything else in the park. Bridges, waterfalls, and cave walls make for a completely different set of memories than ride photos.

A few tips before you go

  • Watch younger kids closely — there are multiple levels and lots of branching paths
  • Wear shoes with grip — some areas get wet from the water effects
  • Don't try to map it out — let kids lead and explore; that's the whole point
  • Aim for mid-day — it's a perfect break when the sun is at its strongest and lines are long

Don't rush past it

The biggest rides at Islands of Adventure deserve their reputation. But some of the best theme park memories happen in the in-between moments — the ones you didn't plan for.

Give Camp Jurassic's caves 20 minutes and see what happens. Your kids might just call it their favorite part of the day.
