It's pouring: a real rain-day plan for every park

If you're visiting Orlando between roughly May and September, you will almost certainly get an afternoon thunderstorm at some point in your trip. It's usually short — 20 to 45 minutes — but it can feel like your whole day is derailed if you don't already know where to go.

Here's the fix: a real list of fully indoor attractions per park, including actual thrill rides, not just the gentle stuff you'd already default to.

The one thing most rain-day lists get wrong

A lot of "what to do when it rains" advice just points you back to slow dark rides and shows — which is fine, but it means your teenager or thrill-seeking parent is stuck doing "it's a small world" for the third time. The rides below are indoor and genuinely intense, so a storm doesn't have to mean a pause on excitement, just a pause on outdoor coasters specifically.

One caveat worth knowing: "indoor ride" doesn't always mean "indoor queue." Some of these have entry queues that are partly outdoors even though the ride itself is covered — during a real storm, ask a Team Member or cast member whether the queue is currently sheltered before committing to a long wait.

Magic Kingdom

• Space Mountain — a full indoor coaster in the dark, unaffected by weather once you're inside.

Pair it with the gentler indoor options — Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan's Flight, "it's a small world," and Mickey's PhilharMagic — to fill out a whole rainy afternoon in Fantasyland and Liberty Square alone.

Epcot

• Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind — a genuine indoor coaster, one of the more intense rides in any Disney park
• Mission: SPACE — fully enclosed, motion-simulator intensity

Round it out with Spaceship Earth, Living with the Land, and the World Showcase pavilion films, most of which run fully indoors.

Hollywood Studios

This is the strongest rainy-day park in the whole Disney lineup:

• Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
• Star Tours — The Adventures Continue
• The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
• Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets

Five real thrill rides, all indoor. A storm at Hollywood Studios is genuinely one of the better problems to have.

Animal Kingdom

• Avatar Flight of Passage — fully indoor motion simulator, one of the park's most intense rides

Animal Kingdom has the fewest indoor options of the four Disney parks by design — it's built around outdoor habitats and exhibits. If a storm hits here, Flight of Passage plus Zootopia: Better Zoogether! and a stop at the indoor gift shops is realistically your best move until it passes.

Universal Islands of Adventure

• Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
• The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
• Skull Island: Reign of Kong

Universal Studios Florida

• Revenge of the Mummy
• Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
• TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D
• The Simpsons Ride
• MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack
• Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon
• Fast & Furious — Supercharged

Universal Studios Florida might be the single best rainy-day park in all of Orlando — nearly its entire headliner lineup is indoor.

Universal Epic Universe

• Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
• Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
• Curse of the Werewolf
• Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge
• Mine-Cart Madness

Dark Universe and the Wizarding World's Ministry of Magic land are almost entirely storm-proof — a genuinely good pivot if outdoor Isle of Berk and Celestial Park get rained out.

How to actually plan around it

• Check the radar in the morning. Florida storms are usually predictable by early afternoon; if the forecast shows a system building, front-load your outdoor must-dos before lunch.
• Don't panic-leave at the first drop. Most storms pass in under an hour — ducking into one of the rides above is often faster than waiting out weather at your hotel.
• Use the wait-time app. Outdoor ride lines often shrink dramatically during a storm since fewer guests want to stand outside — sometimes the best time to grab a normally-long outdoor ride is right as the rain lets up and the queue's already thinned out.

Final thought

A Florida storm doesn't have to mean your park day stalls out. With the right list in your pocket, it's more like a scheduled detour to some of the best rides in the park anyway.
