Lost Continent is being torn down at Islands of Adventure — what we know and what's just rumor

Walk past the far side of Islands of Adventure right now and you'll see it: chunks of rockwork gone, waterways drained, whole structures reduced to open ground. The Lost Continent — one of the park's eight original lands from its 1999 opening day — is actively being demolished, and this time it isn't a rumor. Here's what's actually confirmed, and what's still just speculation about what comes next.

How Lost Continent shrank to this point

Lost Continent used to cover a lot more ground than what's disappearing now. Back in 2010, its Merlinwood section was absorbed into the newly built Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade, which is how the Flying Unicorn coaster became Flight of the Hippogriff, the Enchanted Oak Tavern became the Three Broomsticks, and Dueling Dragons was rebranded as Dragon Challenge.

What was left of Lost Continent after that kept shrinking on its own. The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad, the stunt show, closed in 2018. Poseidon's Fury, the special-effects walkthrough, closed in 2023. By the time demolition permits were filed, what remained was really just a pocket of the park still carrying the old name.

The confirmed timeline

• September 2025: Universal filed construction permits confirming demolition plans for roughly five acres of Lost Continent's remaining retail, show, and attraction buildings.
• November 2025: Demolition began.
• As of this writing: Most of the old Sindbad theater structures are gone, and the rockwork and waterways around the former Poseidon's Fury have been cleared.
• Mythos Restaurant — a genuinely decorated spot, having won Theme Park Insider's Best Restaurant award ten times and become the first inductee into that award's Hall of Fame — is confirmed to close by 2027 as part of this redevelopment. Universal has already announced its replacement: Thunder Falls Terrace, near Jurassic Park River Adventure, closes for renovation in summer 2026 and reopens in 2027 as the park's new signature full-service restaurant, picking up the role Mythos has held since 1999.

Universal has confirmed the demolition and Mythos's closure. What Universal has not confirmed is what replaces any of it.

The replacement theories — and why none of them are confirmed

With no official announcement, park fans and industry press have landed on a few recurring guesses:

A Harry Potter/Hogsmeade expansion. This theory has an obvious logic to it: Lost Continent already lost its Merlinwood section to Hogsmeade in 2010, and the remaining land sits right next door. A gradual continuation of that same absorption — rather than an entirely new IP — would fit the geography cleanly.

A Pokémon land. This is currently one of the most-repeated rumors, fueled by Universal's ongoing, very successful Nintendo partnership through Super Nintendo World.

The Legend of Zelda. Same logic as Pokémon — another Nintendo property, another way to build on a partnership that's already working, this time built around Hyrule.

A few other names get mentioned less consistently, including Wicked, but they show up far less often than the three above.

None of these have permits, concept art, or an official word from Universal behind them — they're pattern-matching from fans and reporters, not leaks. Treat any specific name you hear right now as a guess, not a plan.

Final thought

The demolition itself isn't speculation anymore — that part is happening in plain sight. What replaces Lost Continent is still genuinely unknown, and probably will be for a while. We'll update this post once Universal actually says something official.
